Who is Brandt and why was he significant?
He represented a younger generation of politics and was critical of Adaneur and Nazi assimilation of government.
What is ostpolitik?
the foreign policy of western European countries of detente with reference to the former communist bloc, especially the opening of relations with the Eastern bloc by the Federal Republic of Germany
How did Brandt show his commitment to ostpolitik?
He put several more liberal measures in government , decriminalised homosexuality and reduced the voting age to 16.
How did Brandt almost become undermined?
Several significant political and joined the CDU, they then forced a ?constructive vote of no confidence?
What was the outcome of the constructive no confidence vote?
It failed by just two votes and Brandt responded by calling an election of no confidence to see
What caused Brandt to resign?
In 1974 it was discovered that one of Brandt?s advisors was a GDR spy and he resigned despite having the support of his party and the Bundestag
Which elections did Helmut Schmidt, the new SPD chancellor win?
1976 and 1980
Why did Schmidt win the elections?
There was no viable CDU candidate and he was careful to not introduce politics that rocked the political boat
What was Schmidt accused of adopting?
Introducing economic measures such as high taxation and welfare cuts
What happened to Schmidt on 1st October 1982?
A constructive vote of no confidence forced him to resign and he was replaced by CDU?s Kohl
