What was set up on 30 August 1939?
The Ministerial Council for the defence of the Reich
What was the Ministerial Council for the defence of the Reich?
It was supposed to coordinate domestic affairs to support the war effort. This seemed to be a significant change in direction. Hitler was not on the council although it reported to him.
Who were the leaders of the Ministerial Council for the defence of the Reich?
It was chaired by Hermann Goering and its members were very important Nazi officials: Frick (Minister of inferior), Walther Funk (Minister of the Economy), Wilhelm Keitel (high commander of the armed forces).
How long did the Ministerial Council for the defence of the Reich last?
The council did not last long because it was a falling victim to Hitler’s dislike of group meetings as a way of governing even among his trusted officials. The council was disbanded in November 1939 although Frick, Funk and Keitel met infrequently as the ‘Group of Three’

Living space’, land taken from other countries to provide Germany with the farmland and natural resources that the Germans needed.

The most heavy-handed of these Germanisation programmes was undertaken in Poland as the army swept through.
What did Hitler say about the Poles to the Army?
Hitler made it clear that all Poles were untrustworthy and were to be used for hard labour only. Polish leaders were to be shot so that they did not become a focus of resistance
What happened to Southern Poland?
Southern Poland was treated as a colony. It was used as a dumping ground for all Poles and undesirables from other parts of the Reich, most of whom lived in appalling conditions and were used as slave labour
What is meant by Germanise?
To be forced to conform to German culture but in terms of the Nazis this meant moving non-German people out of an area and moving people with pure German blood into it.
What did the growth of Germany mean?
Germany’s growth meant there was much more land to govern and centralised government became harder. Gauleiters (local party leaders) became increasingly powerful
What happened from 1942 for party leaders?
Following the start of British bombing raids, they were given control of all civil defence measures including rationing, firefighting, bomb damage clearance and rehousing using various Nazi Party organisations.
What did Germany do on 22 June 1941?
