3 important aspects of experimental design
- large number of samples
- include at least one treatment and control
- Data collection
what is inductive reasoning?
draw general conclusions based on specific data
what is microevolution?
occurs when the proportion of individuals with a certain trait, genotype and allele frequency, changes from one generation to the next
within the same species
what is macroevolution?
when the difference becomes so different between two or more populations that individuals from those populations can no longer mate
same as speciation
what is stablilizing selection?
average phenotypes are beneficial, extreme traits will be selected against
what is direct selection?
selects for extreme phenotypes (at one end of the spectrum) often occurs when the environment changes
ex, seed size may select different beak sizes in finches
what is diversifying selection (disruptive)
selects two or more distinct phenotypes, while the intermediate phenotypes are less fit
ex. patchy camouflage is beneficial in rabbits
what is frequency dependent selection?
favors phenotypes that are either common (positive frequency-dependent) or rare (negative frequency-dependent)
what is intersexual selection?
males defend their territory or food patch and fight off other males that try to mate with females in that area. common in areas where food sources are patchy
females are choosy and choose the males with the most showy and costly features. common in areas where food sources are dispersed more evenly.
