Cytology - definition
the morphological examination of cells in isolation or in clusters, removed from their tissue of origin
General indications for the use of cytology (min. 7)
- Effusions - thoracic & abdominal
- Urine sediiments, urine bladder washing
- Prostate - direct aspirate, washing
- Lymphoadenopathy - focal, generalised
- Examination of metastatic processes
- Cutaneous/ subcutaneous masses, ulcerative lesions
- Unidentified masses
Stains used in cytology (min. 5)
- Romanovsky
- PAS
- Sudan Black
- Hematoxylin Eosin
- Liesgang
Eosinophilic inflammation - cytological picture, aetiology, occurrence
Characterised by more than 3% of eosinophils in the tissue
It can be caused due to: flea bite, feline eosinophilic skin disease, anaplastic syndrome, allergy
Cytology of acute and chronic haemorrhage
Acute: numerous red blood cells in tissue accompanied with neutrophils. Oedema
Chronic: presence of macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. They have engulfed some erythrocytes. We can see blood pigments as hemosiderin
Cancer - the definition
abnormal growth of cell that proliferates in uncontrolled way and may metastasise
Nuclear criteria of malignancy
Anisokaryosis
Indirect criteria of malignancy
Hyper cellularity
Skin - normal cytology
Sebaceous glands
Keratocytes
Hair follicles
Squamos cells
Epithelial cells
Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinousum
Fibroma and fibrosarcoma
Neoplasms from fibrocytes/ fibrous CT. Can happen in bones skin …
Fibroma is benign
Fibrisarcoma is malignant
