Combination Acts
(1799/1800)
Prevented groups of workers from combining and demanding better wages and working conditions. It made associates of working men illegal. The government were scared of radical movements (F Revolution)
Act of Union
1800.
Pitt brought Ireland into the British Political System. However, he told them that in return they would get Catholic Emancipation. The government excluded this from the terms of Act of Union, it didn’t happen and Pitt felt compelled to resign.
New Lanark Mills
1800.
Robert Own took charge of them. He provided the workers with extremely good working conditions however was the exception rather than the norm.
Abolition of the Slave Trade
1807.
William Wilberforce achieved the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. It did nothing to help those already enslaved in plantations of British colonies. ‘Claphamites’ launched a Propaganda campaign.
Orders in Council
1807
Boycotting French Trade. Stated that all countries that excluded British ships would be subjected to a British Blockade and imposed restrictions on neutral ships trading with blockaded posts. Prime Minister Grenville who believed in free trade had been against retaliation but was overruled. The Orders were extended after much political disagreement.
