Aimed to establish a democracy in Ireland with equal rights for all men, no matter their religion.
Order against Seditious Writings

Issued to carb radical influence. Pitt was made nervous by spread of Corresponding Societies and various anti-government publications.
September Massacres
1792
Revolutionary leaders in France allowed the deaths of thousands of French prisoners who were counter-revolutionists. Was met by general revulsion in Britain (except among radicals) and it quietened some reformers.
London Corresponding Society Formd
1792.
Most influential. Members wanted political reform and lower taxes. They exchanged ideas through meetings and pamphlet distribution.
Britain joins French Revolutionary Wars
1793.
Pitt declared War after the French King and Queen were executed. He feared a threat to British interests.
Friendly Societies Act
1793.
Gave members the legal right to hold meetings and have their funds protected. Made up of groups of workmen to provide insurance for themselves and their families against sickness, old age and death.
Catholic Relief Act
1793.
Gave Catholics the right to vote, but not to become MPs.
Habeas Corpus Suspended
1794
Enabled authorities to arrest and detain a person without trial. Justified on grounds that firm measures had to be taken to guarantee the safety of the King- government repression.
Treasonable Practices Act
1795.
Made it an offence to speak against the King- government repression as a result of War with France.
Seditious Meetings Act
1795.
Passed to curb large gatherings, in order to avoid possible riots- government repression.
Income Tax
1798.
Pitt introduced income tax as an alternative to raising loans. Money was needed for the war against France. Although not at first, by 1806 it was very successful.
Irish Rebellion led by Wolfe Tone
1798.
Wolfe Tone was involved in plotting French landings in Ireland to overthrow the government. It failed and he was captured. It showed Pitt that the Protestant-dominant Irish Parliament couldn’t maintain stability. Motivation for Act of Union.
Aliens Act
1793
Controlled immigration into the country- prevented French Revolutionary agents entering Britain.
