What were cottage hospitals?
Small and provided nursing care while the medical treatment was prescribed by GPs, basic care.
What were workhouses?
A prison for the poor, people would be forced to do manual labour. Set up by poor law amendment act 1834. Public concern eventually made them better.
What did Nightingale do?
For nursing she: Cleaned up the wards
Supervised nurses and wrote books on nursing to instruct people how to do it properly
For Hospitals she: Cleaned the horrible conditions at the army hospital by giving patients space and ventilation.
What was the impact of nightingale?
She reduced the death rate
Nursing became more respected
Hospitals became better designed
What establishment did Mary Seacole open?
The british hotel, high priced but offered free medicine to wounded soldiers.
What did pasteur discover?
He discovered that germs were the cause of rotting and disease through the investigation of off wine.
What was the impact of Pasteur’s discovery?
Antibiotics eventually discovered
Undermined the church (WIN)
Everything was cleaned up, streets, people washed and hospitals became more hygenic.
What book did Edwin Chadwick write?
A report on the sanitary conditions of the labouring population
What act did Chadwick’s book force?
It forced the 1875 health act, first one was in 1848 but was not compulsory.
Why was the government forced to improve public health?
People now knew what was killing them thanks to Chadwick, John Snow and Pasteur. This combined with their recent power to vote meant MP’s offered improvements in exchange for their vote.
