18- streams Flashcards
Stream network order
Streams within the network are assigned a rank according to size or position within the network - smallest stream = first order , when 2 first order streams join = second order
Stream channel types - 2 types
Bedrock channels - water flows over the local bedrock , bedrock channels are fixed in position for long periods of time
Alluvial channels - water flows through unconsolidated sediment particles that can be eroded, transported and deposited by the flow
Stream Channel patterns
types of sedimentary deposits formed by streams and rivers .
3 types - originally straight, meandering and braiding
although terms like anabranching, anastomosed and wandering are also used
factors influencing stream channel pattern - 4 factors
slope, discharge, sediment supply, sediment size
3 stages of Sediment transport
3 stages of sediment transport : entrainment, transport, deposition
entrainment
release of sediment a result of erosion which leads to sediment transport, influenced by particle size, shear stress and slope
3 modes of sediment transport
Suspended sediment - fine particles that are carried continuously in the water column
bed load - coarse grains that are transported along the bed by rolling +
sliding traction and saluting bouncing
solution - dissolved minerals carried in solution
floodplains
flat low lying area on either side of a stream channel that will be inundated when the stream floods
floodplains features
oxbow lakes, meander lakes, bluffs, levees, terraces
