18. SIDs & STARs - ATM1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is a STAR?

A

Standard Terminal Arrival Route

A designated instrument flight rule (IFR) arrival route linking a significant point, normally on an ATS route, with a point from which a published instrument approach procedure can be commenced.

Q

What is a SID?

A

Standard Instrument Departure

A designated instrument flight rule (IFR) departure route linking the aerodrome or a specified runway of the aerodrome with a specified significant point, normally on a designated ATS route, at which the en route phase of a flight commences.

Q

What is the purpose of SIDs & STARS? (5)

A
  • Provide adequate terrain clearance.
  • Be compatible with Radio Communication Failure (RTF) procedures.
  • Be compatible with Noise Preferential Routes (NPRs)
  • Allow for uninterrupted climb and descent.
  • Allow for the performance of the aircraft. (Must cater for the poorest performing)
  • Reduce RTF loading for ATC and pilots.

What are NPRs?

A

Noise Preferential Routes

NPRs are designed for the purpose of assisting
aeroplanes in avoiding noise-sensitive areas on
departure and arrival, this includes turns to direct
aeroplanes away from noise-sensitive areas located
under or adjacent to the take-off and approach flight
paths; and
use of noise abatement take-off or approach
procedures, designed to minimise the overall
exposure to noise on the ground and at the same
time maintain the required levels of flight safety.
NPRs will always be incorporated into a SID.
