Q

discuss water as a polar molecule

A

uneven distribution of charge due to +ve H ions and -ve O ions means ionic substances can dissolve in it

Q

what is high specific heat capacity?

A

it means water needs a lot of energy to change it’s temperature, which is ideal for organisms that live in rivers and lakes

Q

why does water have a large latent heat of vapourisation?

A

so that the evaporation of water provides a cooling effect with little water loss

Q

what are cohesion and adhesion?

A

cohesion is when water molecules stick together due to hydrogen bonds between H+ and O- meaning it can be transported in xylem tubes and surface tension is also high at water-air boundaried
adhesion is when water molecules stick to the sides of tube like cells

Q

what is the maximum density of water?

A
  • 4’C
  • ice is less dense than water as molecules are more spaced apart
  • ice floats on water creating habitats and insulation layers

Q

what are the advantages of water being incompressible?

A
  • provides good support and structure in xylem or earth worms who have no skeleton
  • can also be used in hydraulic mechanisms
