1.7 water Flashcards
discuss water as a polar molecule
uneven distribution of charge due to +ve H ions and -ve O ions means ionic substances can dissolve in it
what is high specific heat capacity?
it means water needs a lot of energy to change it’s temperature, which is ideal for organisms that live in rivers and lakes
why does water have a large latent heat of vapourisation?
so that the evaporation of water provides a cooling effect with little water loss
what are cohesion and adhesion?
cohesion is when water molecules stick together due to hydrogen bonds between H+ and O- meaning it can be transported in xylem tubes and surface tension is also high at water-air boundaried
adhesion is when water molecules stick to the sides of tube like cells
what is the maximum density of water?
- 4’C
- ice is less dense than water as molecules are more spaced apart
- ice floats on water creating habitats and insulation layers
what are the advantages of water being incompressible?
- provides good support and structure in xylem or earth worms who have no skeleton
- can also be used in hydraulic mechanisms
