17 Trailer Operations Flashcards
Trailers are often used for:
- TRT
- Boat Ops
- Traffic Control
- Mass-Casualty Incidents
One safety issue posed by trailers:
Inadequate driver training
Towing oversized load may result in damage:
- Brake components will be prone to damage and failure - excess kinetic energy
- Transmissions: excess heat breaks down the fluid, creating a lack of lubrication inside the transmission
- Overloaded suspension components may crack or fail completely under stress
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The total weight of the trailer, including equipment, fluids, and the weight of the trailer itself.
Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating
Total weight of tow vehicle, trailer, passengers, fuel, liquids, and equipment
Weight Carrying Hitch
Carries all the tongue weight
Weight Distributing Hitch
Distributes tongue weight across the tow vehicle’s entire frame
Fifth Wheel Hitch
Mounted in the bed, forward of the rear axles - improves stability and maneuverability, trailer sway is nearly eliminated
Gooseneck Hitch
Similar to Fifth Wheel but uses a ball hitch instead of a pin
Advantage to Electromagnetic Brakes:
Ability to engage the trailer brakes separate from the tow vehicle’s brakes.
Two types of brake controllers:
- Time Delay - applies preset amount of brake force
- Proportional - applies brakes at same intensity as tow vehicle
Surge Braking System
As tow vehicle slows, trailer pushes against hitch and engages a hydraulic master cylinder
Advantages of surge brakes
No need for a separate controller inside the tow vehicle. Also, this is the disadvantage.
One of the most difficult tasks a driver could face:
Towing a trailer
The first step in safe trailer operations is to
properly secure the trailer to the tow vehicle.
