1.7 osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is a special case of the fusion. It is the movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane that allows water to pass through.
How does the difference in the concentration of solutions affect osmosis?
The difference in concentration of solutions inside outside of cell cause water to move into or out of the cell by osmosis
What happens to animal cells if the concentration outside the cell changes dramatically?
The animal cells can be damaged
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A membrane that allows only certain substances to pass through
What does isotonic mean?
A solution that is the same concentration as the cell contents
What does hypotonic mean?
A solution that is more concentrated in the cell contents
What does hypotonic mean?
A solution that is less concentrated in the cell contents
