1.2 animal and plant cells Flashcards
What common features do animal cells have?
A nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, and ribosomes
What do plant and algal cells contain?
A nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes
What do plant and our cells contain that animal cells don’t?
They contain a cellulose cell wall
What do many plant cells contain?
Many plant cells contain chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole filled with sap
What is the nucleus?
Nucleus controls all activities of cell and is surrounded by nuclear membrane. Contains the gene on the chromosomes (carries the instructions for making proteins needed to build new cells or organisms)
What is the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is a liquid gel which the organelles are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life, Take place
What is the cell membrane?
Cell membrane controls passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cell. It also controls movement of substances such as urea or hormones out of the cell.
What is the mitochondria?
The mitochondria structures in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes place releasing energy for cell.
What are the ribosomes?
The ribosomes is where protein synthesis take place making all the proteins needed in the cell
What does the cell wall do?
The sun rule is made of cellulose that strengthens the cell and give it support
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are found in all the green parts of a plant.
Why are chloroplasts green?
Chloroplast are green as they contain the green substance chlorophyll
What does chlorophyll do?
The chlorophyll absorbs light so the plant can make food by photosynthesis
Why do root cells not have chloroplast?
They do not have chloroplasts as they are underground and do not photosynthesise
What is a permanent vacuole?
A permanent vacuole is a space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. This keeps the cells rigid to support the plant.
