1.7 Momentum Flashcards
What is the definition of momentum?
The product of mass and velocity.
Or
The tendency of an object to continue moving in the same way.
What is the principle of momentum conservation?
In an isolated system, the total momentum before the collision is equal to the momentum after the collision.
What does coalesce mean?
When two objects stick together after a collision.
What is an elastic collision?
A collision in which kinetic energy is conserved.
What is an inelastic collision?
A collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved.
What is a total inelastic collision?
A collision in which the 2 objects stuck together, with a large loss in kinetic energy.
What is important in a momentum question?
- Momentum is always conserved.
- Kinetic energy is only conserved in elastic collisions.
- Total energy is conserved in all collisions.
What is Newton’s second law written in terms of momentum?
The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the resultant force and acts in the direction of the force.
What is impulse?
Impulse is the product of force and the time the force is applied for.
