17 - Flooding Flashcards
what effects the extent of flooding
elevation flood waters get too and the topography of the land exposed
what is fluvial (river) flooding
result of elevated river flow and water levels from rainfall, snow melt and/or glacial melt
what is pluvial (surface) flooding
results from surface runoff caused by rainfall, which is unable to infiltrate into the ground (e.g fully saturated or concrete)
what is coastal flooding
occurs from the combination of storm surges, high tides and wave action onto if mean sea level
what is groundwater flooding
the rise of the water table ti the ground surface or an elevation above human development
what is dam break (or damming) flooding
occurs from dam failure (rapid release of water causing flooding downstream) or damming (blocking of rivers preventing flow and causing flooding upstream)
what is a tsunami
a series of large waves generated by the sudden displacement of water
what are compound flooding
flooding caused my two events e.g. river flooding and surface flooding
what is SPRC model
source pathway receptor consequences model
what is source in the SPRC model
the origin of the hazard
what is pathway in the SPRC model
route that a hazard takes to reach receptors
what is receptor in the SPRC model
the entity that may be harmed
what is consequence in the SPRC model
an impact such ad social, economic or environmental damage
