11 - Tectonic setting of earthquakes Flashcards
where do earthquakes occur
at plate boundaries
what is subduction zones
subduction zones where 2 plates collide and one is pushed underneath the other
what kinds of earthquakes at subduction zones
largest deepest and most powerful earthquakes, also can cause tsunamis
what is continental collision
where 2 plates collides, the subduction zone is destroyed and mountains are formed
what is plate divergence
where 2 plates are moving away from one another
what are continental rifts
where plates are moving apart, causeing thinning of the lithosphere, forming mid ocean ridges (have earthquakes but aren’t hazardous)
what are strike slip plate boundaries
vertical fractures where the plates move horizontally past each other aka transform or conservative boundaries
