1.7 Earth's Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Lithosphere (Continental Crust)
A
30 - 40km thick. We live on it. Less dense than the ocean. Mainly silicon based rock. Average 25°C
2
Q
Lithosphere (Oceanic Crust)
A
5 - 8km thick. Liquid state. Made of water (H2O). Average 10 - 900°C
3
Q
Asthenosphere (Mantle)
A
A mobile layer in upper mantle. Quite dense. Semi - molten state. Silicon mainly. 1300°C
4
Q
Lower Mantle
A
Moves the tectonic plates. Semi - molten. Silicon based rocks. 1600 - 3700°C
5
Q
Outer Core
A
Liquid iron + nickel. Dense. Liquid state. 4000 - 5700°C
6
Q
Lithosphere + Asthenosphere
A
The difference between these two is that the lithosphere is the oceanic crust, while the asthenosphere is part of the mantle
