1.4 Tropical Cyclones Flashcards
Names in Different parts of the World
N + S America = Hurricanes
Africa + India = Cuclones
Russia + NE Asia - Typhoons
Australia = Willy Willies
Source Areas
Occur a few degress N + S of the equator (in the tropics). Coriolis effect adds to rotation. Likely to occurin ITCZ (area of permament low pressure generated by global circualtion within the Hadley cells)
How they form
If the water that fuels the cyclone is hotter, the intensity of it increases. Dissipitation happens in the cyclone when it reaches an area of land, or cold water, because it doesn’t have warm water fueling it. Dissipitation also happens when another weather system blows wind in the opposite direction
Air pressure
Air pressure is important to cyclones because tropical cyclones have much lower air pressure than the air surrounding them. The bigger the difference in pressure, the steonger the winds
Coriolis Force
A strong force created by the Earth’s rotation
Eye
The centre of a tropical cyclone
Seasonal Distribution
How something such as tropical cyclones occur at different times of the year
Source Area
The region in which a tropical storm first forms
Track
The path followed by a tropical storm
