1.5 Tropical cyclones Hazards Flashcards
Hazards
Flooding + Intense Winds Storm Surges Intense Rainfall + Winds Landslides Collapsing Flying Objects
Saffir Simpson Scale
A scale from 1 - 5 based on a hurricanes sustained wind speed. It estimates potential property damage
Difference between Category 3 and 5
Category 3 - Storm surge of 3.4m tall with winds of up to 129mph. Buildings suffer major damage
Category 5 - Storm surge of 5.5m tall with winds >157mph. Buildings will be destroyed and main roads will be cut off
Physical Factor 1
How high it is from sea level. If an area is closer to sea level, it’ll be more affected. An example is the Phillipines which is highly affected because the hpuses are so close to sea level
Physical Factor 2
The relief on the area. Areas of low relief are highly affected by strong winds and rain, as well as storm surges. Areas of high relief are affected by heavy rain and landslides, especially on steeper areas
Social Facotr 1
The amount of poverty in the area. If a cyclone hits, there isn’t any housing or other construction of a high enough standard to protect them, and those buildings would be destroyed very quickly
Social Factor 2
The amount of elderly, or younger, people. The population would suffer as they’re more likely to get injured and infected during disasters, and they wouldn’t be able to evacuate as quickly
Economic Factor
They’re a high reason of damage in areas that suffer a lot from tropical cyclones, especially if they’re poor. Low wealth means they’re buildings would be destroyed
