16.3 - Meiosis & Nondisjunction Flashcards
Meiosis
The process that produced haploid gametes from diploid cells.
How many phases of Meiosis
PMAT x 2
Metaphase 1
Tetrads line up along the equatorial plane of the cell.
Prophase 1
The nuclear membrane dissolves. Chromosomes undergo synapsis and attach to spindle fibers. Crossing over occurs.
Germ cells
Gamete-producing cells
Synapsis
The aligning of homologous chromosomes is called synapsis.
Crossing over
Segments of chromosome from mom are switching with chromosome of dad. - Gives genetic variation.
Anaphase 1
Homologous chromosomes separate and move toward opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase 1
A nuclear envelope forms around each set of separated chromosomes.
Homologous chromosomes
Same gene, different alleles.
