most commonly used form of observation in education are lesson observations carried out as part of
OFSTED inspections
Pratically More costly/time efficient
Compared to participant observatoin. = may be less time consuming as u have not got to intergrate or gain acceptance in a group
Pratical Quantitive data
as will be able to use a structured observation schedule to record data easily especially if its covert, this should also make them more reliable
Theoretical objectivity
psotivists would suggest this type of observation is more objective and not participating means it is easier to be objective when interpreting groiup behviour
Theoritical reduced hawthrone effects?
Researcher is less likely to influence the groups behaviour as they are not actually joining in with the group’s behviour and activities
practical - it might not be practially possible
to conduct non-paritcpant observation on certain groups
ethicall if it s done covertly rhere may be
ETHICAL ISSUES OF CONSENT, DECEPTION AND invasion of privacy
Theoritcal lacks validity
as it is superficial observing from the outside leaves the researcher with a limited understadning of what they have observed and therefore the method may lack validity
ADVANTAGES
Valid - limited risk of the researcher
