1.6 Modern industrial and commercial practice Flashcards
1
Q
What is one-off production?
A
Individually designed and manufactured products that meet a client’s personal specification.
2
Q
How is one-off production costly?
A
- complexity of the design, decoration and use of high-quality materials
- fewer economies for sale, e.g. no bulk discount on materials
- high labour costs, as one highly skilled person usually makes the product so can take days
- a need for high levels of quality control throughout the whole process
3
Q
What is batch production?
A
Batch production is where many items of the same product are produced
4
Q
Pros of batch production
A
- more efficient
- teams of workers, skilled in more than one job - manufacturing set up can be altered and teams of workers can simultaneously work on different products
- products are less complex in their design and use standardised components
- planned quality control checks can be done by checking a specified number of products from each batch
- A batch can range from two - more than 100,000 items
(making products cheaper= bulk purchasing, fabrics & components are possible)
5
Q
What is mass production?
A
Large numbers of identical products are continuously manufactured over a long period of timer
6
Q
Cons of mass production
A
- Set up is inflexible
- expensive
- Takes a long time to change if the product is changed
- One problem can halt the whole production line
- Planned quality control checks have to be done at key stages to avoid costly mistakes later on
- Bulk buying of fabric and components
7
Q
Examples of mass produced products
A
- Levi’s Jeans
- White school shirts
- T-shirts
8
Q
What is line production?
A
