๐งก 1.6: Introduction to Parasitology: Part 3 Flashcards
What parasite cause Malaria?
Plasmodium
Malaria Definitive Host
Anopheles Mosquitos
Why are anopheles mosquitoes considered definitive host?
They can replicate by cell division in any host but only perform sexual reproduction in mosquitoes
Malarial Mosquito Stages (1)
Takes blood meal from infected human and gets parasite
Malarial Mosquito Stages (2)
Form a parasite called gametocyte found in blood
Malarial Mosquito Stages (3)
Gametocytes complete sexual reproduction resulting in sporozoite
Malarial Mosquito Stages (4)
Sporozoite migrate to salivary glands of mosquito
Malarial Mosquito Stages (5)
Bite of infected mosquito transfers parasite to person
Gametocyte
sex cell
Why is malaria limited?
mosquitoes need pools of standing water and temperatures above 70 degrees
Malarial Human Stages
Liver and Red Blood Cells
Liver Stage
1- Sporozoites in mosquito saliva are infected during bite
2- Then travel and infect liver cells
3- Start replicating causing liver to fill up with parasites and burst putting them into blood
Red Blood Cell Stage
- Newly made parasites reinfect red blood cells and produce for parasites
- Some develop into gametes infecting next mosquito
