What are the six principles of the Data Protection Act (2018)?
Data must be:
- Collected lawfully and fairly and transparently processed
- Only used for specified, explicit and legitimate reasons
- Relevant and not excessive
- Accurate and up to date
- Stored only for as long as necessary
- Stored and protected securely
What are the three main principles of the Computer Misuse Act (1990)?
- No unauthorised access to computer material
- No unauthorised access to computer material with intent to commit further offences
- No unauthorised modification of computer material
What does the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988) specify?
- Authors of intellectual property have automatic rights
- Permission from the author may be needed to use or share (in the form of licences)
What are the requirements for a creation to be copyrighted?
-Must be independently created (not copied)
-Needs to be a tangible thing that can be seen, communicated or copied (not just an idea)

When is it legal to copy, publish, sell or distribute copyrighted material?
-When you are the copyright holder
-When you have the copyright holder’s permission
-When the copyright holder has chosen to give up their copyright
What are the requirements for a patent to be granted?
It must be:
-New
-Inventive
-Have industrial applicability (must be able to make money from it)
What is an open source licence?
Users can view and modify the source code
What are the advantages of an open source licence?
- Source code is available to edit and can be customised to the organisation’s needs + unwanted features can be removed to make software run faster
- Shared in public domain so users can work together to improve a product
- Often low in price or free
- Can be installed on as many computers as necessary
What are the disadvantages of an open source licence?
- Security risks as editors can add malicious code
- There is no guarantee that it works properly, as there is no requirement for anyone to ensure it is bug free
- Difficult to receive support, especially if the program is not in widespread use
- Requires technical skills to maintain the code
What is a proprietary licence?
Software licenced under strict conditions, usually preventing you from modifying or distributing the software, and you can’t view or modify the source code
What are the advantages of a proprietary licence?
- Code is well tested and should be bug-free
- Company can be held to account
- Organisation provides help/support, as well as community
What are the disadvantages of a proprietary licence?
- Rely on company to provide updates
- Often not free
- Users can’t modify the code to suit it to their needs
- Extra licenses must be obtained before installing on additional computers
What are cultural issues?
Issues relating to society and how different parts of the world vary in terms of computer and internet usage
What is the The Digital Divide?
The division between those who have full access to technology and are comfortable in using it and those who don’t.
