1.6 Division with Mixed Numbers Flashcards
Proper fraction:
A fraction that describes an amount less than one whole, where the numerator is less than the denominator.
Improper fraction:
A fraction that describes an amount greater than or equal to one whole, where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
Mixed number:
The sum of a whole number and fraction; a mixed number has a whole number part and a fraction part.
Steps for converting a mixed number to an improper fraction:
[1] Multiply the denominator by the whole-number part.
[2] Add that product to the numerator of the fraction part of the mixed number.
[3] The sum is the numerator of the improper fraction.
[4] The denominator of the mixed number is the denominator of the improper fraction.
Steps for converting an improper fraction to a mixed number:
[1] Divide the numerator by the denominator. You will get a whole-number quotient and a remainder.
[2] The whole-number quotient is the whole-number part of the mixed number.
[3] The remainder is the numerator of the fraction part of the mixed number.
[4] The denominator of the improper fraction is the denominator of the mixed number.
Problem Solving
Two things can happen:
[1] You would get a word problem and have to solve using the numbers given.
[2] You would get the numbers and have to create a scenario for it.
Always make sure you determine which number represents the dividend and which one represents the divisor.
