What is POP3?
A
Post Office Protocol
- Email protocol used to RETRIEVE email and DL it to a local client.
- Downloads the email message from the ISPs account.
- You have the option to delete that message from the server
- Authentication: Name of POP3 server, Username and Password
- Software might require a port no. that’s in use for the POP3 communication.
- Legacy Protocol
- POP3 port: tcp/110
- SSL POP3S: tcp/995

What is IMAP4?
A
Internet Message Access Protocol
- RETRIEVE messages but leave them stored on a central server
- Can perform searches on the server using this protocol
- Authentication: Name of the IMAP server. Username and Password
- IMAP port: tcp/143
- SSL IMAPS: tcp/993

What is SMTP?
A
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
- SENDS email from local device to your ISP’s SMTP server
- Must be from a trusted device. Authentication is usually involved.
- Authentication: May be different credentials than the incoming mail.
- SMTP port: tcp/25
- SSL SMTP: tcp/587

How does Microsoft Exchange work?
A
It is an enterprise email system
- More than just email. Synchronizes Contacts, Calendars, Reminders,
- Integrates with mobile device database, can synchronize contacts, calendars, etc..
- Configuration options: Provide an email Address, Specify the exchange Server name, Domain, Username and Password
- Provides encryption: Using S/MIME. Allows to encrypt and digitally sign the messages that are sent/receive from Microsoft exchange

How do Commercial Email Providers work?
A
- You may not be directly receiving mail from a server from your ISP
- These are integrated services, such a Google mail and Yahoo mail.
- Google allows IMAP4 and POP3
- Exchange allows IMAP4 and POP3
- iCloud Mail IMAP4 only
- Yahoo Mail IMAP4 and POP3
