1.6 Flashcards
Muscle fibers
The cells or the basic building blocks of the muscle
Electrical impulses from the brain cause them to contract enabling movement
Two types of muscle fibre
Slow twitch
Fast twitch
Slow twitch
Fibre size : small
Speed of contraction : slow
Force produced : low
Fatigue tolerance : high
Fats twitch
Fibre size : large
Speed of contraction : fast
Force produced : high
Fatigue tolerance : low
Aerobic exercise
Used oxygen to produce energy
Allows athletes to work at low / moderate intensities
And for long period of time
Aerobic exercise activities are better with
Slow twitch muscle fibers are more suited to aerobic activities
Eg ) marathon running
Anaerobic exercise
A short period of high intensity activity
Energy is provided rapidly
Athletes fatigue quickly and lactic acid is produced
Anaerobic exercise suits more which muscle twitch
Fast twitch muscle fibers are more suited to anaerobic activities
Eg) sprinting
Road cycling
Moderate intensity
High Duration
Low force production
Do not tire easily
—> slow twitch
Slow or fast twitch
Triple jump
Very high intensity low duration
Produce lots of force fire quickly = fast
Slow twitch
Aerobic training method such as continuous training - running on a treadmill
Fast twitch
Strength and power based training such as weight training plyometrics or high intensity interval training
Activity open water swimming - muscle fibre type
Slow twitch
Gymnastics vault - muscle fibre type
Fast twitch
Done in a few second involves power movements
Netball - muscle fibre type
Both contain to contract allowing players to move around
High intensity burst jumping
