It is then entered into the transponder and transmittedback to ATC as a reply. The military Mode 3 is identical to the civilian Mode A.

IFF Transponder Mode “4/5 CAUTION”

Illuminates when the ATC ground station, missile battery, oranother aircraft is interrogating in M4 or M5 (as depicted) with a crypto-code that doesnot match the key loaded into the aircraft transponder. In this case the aircrafttransponder will NOT reply. And the crew is alerted that the mission aircraft does notappear as friendly to the interrogator. (Codes are mismatching).

IFF Transponder Mode “5 LETHAL”

Illuminates red when the ATC ground station, missile battery, oranother aircraft is interrogating in M5 lethal format while the mission aircraft is onstandby.* In this case, the mission aircraft transponder is able to replynonetheless to prevent fratricide.
