1.55 Design For Manufacture Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of packaging?
A
- Protection
- Containment
- Identification (logos)
- Transport
- Stacking & Storage
- Printed information (bar codes/ info for CIM systems)
2
Q
What are ways to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment?
A
- Use recycled materials
- Lighter materials used
- Minimise the use of tapes and adhesives
- Minimise wasted space in the packaging (fewer materials/ reduce possible damage in transit).
- Re-usable packaging
- Plastic bags filled with air rather than LDPS/ cardboard.
3
Q
What are the advantages of using one material in a product?
A
Single material makes the product easier to make and recycle therefore reducing the environmental impact.
4
Q
What should be taken into account when selecting materials?
A
- Reduce the use of materials with harmful chemicals in them.
- Reduce composite materials (fiberglass)= fewer adhesives.
- Reduce rare metal components- difficult to separate and recycle.
- Reduce components/ fixings= cheaper to make, easier to disassemble.
5
Q
What do designers need to consider about manufacturing?
A
Select processes based on quantities required, less complex/energy-consuming processes (e.g. powder coating vs spray coating)>
