1.51 Advances In Technology And ICT In Manufacturer Flashcards
What is computer aided design (CAD)?
CAD is used to help people, by the use of a computer, to design ideas, build models and prototypes.
What is computer-aided manufacture (CAM)?
A system where a computer is used to control an assist with the manufacture of a product.
What are the advantages of CAM?
- Accuracy/precision.
- Time efficiency & 24/7 production.
- Reduced labour costs.
- Repeatability & Automation (no human error).
- Can work in harmful environments.
What are the disadvantages of CAM?
- High investment costs
- High training costs.
- Maintenance costs.
- Job losses (i.e. skilled craftsmen).
- Risk of data corruption is high/security.
What is computer numerical control (CNC)?
CNC machine tools are programmable, automated means of machining components.
What is computer integrated manufacture (CIM)?
The use of a fully automated, computer controlled system where aspects of the job are controlled including: design, planning, manufacture, quality control, packaging and delivery, finance and stock ordering.
What are the advantages of a computer integrated manufacture (CIM) system?
- Quicker time for manufacture.
- Higher quality products.
- Increase efficiency- more products in shorter time frames.
- Less wastage- time/resources.
What is quick response manufacturing (QRM)?
Company-wide management strategy with a single focus on reducing lead times as opposed to reducing waste. Applied to all aspects of operations. (Time is money).
What is flexible manufacturing systems (FMS)?
Allows manufacturers to adapt to changing technologies and meet the demands of customers more quickly and efficiently. Expansive to setup but produces high quality products.
What are the advantages of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS)?
- Accurate/ repetitive- consistency.
- Flexibility in the system (machine flexibility).
- Can be changed to different products or volumes. (Respond to market demand).
What is Kanban?
A Kanban system uses efficient material production (coloured boxes/cards), efficient material flow and workflow to reduce the need of floor space to store stock and inventory which improves efficiency.
