15.1 Skill Classification and Stages of Learning Flashcards
Describe Gross Motor Skills using an example
Recruiting large muscle groups with less emphasis on precision, e.g. running
Describe Fine Motor Skills using an example
Recruiting smaller muscles for precision movements e.g. the finger and hand movement in darts.
Describe Discrete motor skills using an example
Clear beginning and end, e.g. a netball pass
Describe Continuous motor skills using an example
No definite beginning or end, e.g. running.
Describe Serial motor skills using an example
When several discrete skills are performed in a sequence, e.g. a gymnastics floor routine.
Describe Closed motor skills using an example
Skills where the performer has the greatest control over the performance environment. Eg a Basketball free throw.
Describe Open motor skills using an example
Performed in a less predictable environment eg a game of soccer
Describe the cognative stage of learning
Learner makes large and frequent errors, attention is focused on thinking through each movement, can’t correct errors yet
Describe the associative stage of learning
Beginning to associate the activity with the environment, fewer errors, beginning to fix own mistakes
Describe the autonomous stage of learning
Performance is automatic, can focus on tactics and correct own errors.
