11. Thermoregulation + Acute CV responses Flashcards
Define thermoregulation
The maintenance of body temperature
List the 3 mechanisms the body uses to control temperature
Sweating, shivering and redistribution of blood flow to the skin and around the body.
Describe hyperthermia
When the body get too hot
Describe how the body deals with hyperthermia
Increased blood flow to the skin in order to get closer to the cooler air, increased sweat rate and evaporation of the sweat from the surface of the skin which cools the body.
Describe hypothermia
When the body gets too cold
Describe how the body deals with hypothermia
- Shivering creates heat via aerobic respiration
- Redistribution of blood flow away from the extremities and towards the major organs to sustain their function and keep the blood warmer.
List the acute cardiovascular responses to exercise
Increased HR, SV, Q, AV02 difference and systolic blood pressure. Decreased blood volume (Plasma) and blood flow redistribution
Define AV02 Difference
The difference in the amount of oxygen in the arteries and the veins.
