Describe the use of altitude training to improve performance
- Increases RBC’s via increased release of EPO due to less 02 in the air at altitude.
- Therefore you can work at a higher intensity aerobically for longer therefore increased average speed.
Describe the use of hypoxic tents to improve performance
- Simulate high altitude by removing some 02 from air leading to increased RBC’s, thus can work at a higher intensity aerobically for longer.
Describe the use of hyperbaric chambers to improve performance
Areas that have higher concentrations of 02 in the air than normal, hence speeding up recovery from fatigue and injury.
Describe how sleep can improve performance
- Reduces the production of the stress hormone cortisol, therefore decreases stress, anxiety, increases concentration, memory and general health.
-Also increases the release of HGH therefore improves muscle growth and repair.
Describe how cryotherapy can improve performance
Using ice and cold water causes a reduction in blood flow to the injuries therefore decreased localised swelling, therefore can train and play again sooner.
Describe how Thermotherapy can improve performance
Warm water can increase blood flow, therefore increase 02 to muscles which speeds up recovery.
Describe how massage and foam rolling can improve performance
It increases blood flow, therefore more 02 to the muscles, therefore faster recovery. Also helps psychologically to relax the mind.
