Def - Toward the front of the body
Ex - Teeth are anterior to throat

Def - Toward the back of the body
Ex - Brain is posterior to eyes

Ety - Dorsum, back
Def - Toward the back (Synonymous with posterior)
Ex - Spine is dorsal to breastbone
Ventral
Ety - Venter, belly
Def - Toward the belly (Synonymous with anterior)
Ex - Navel is ventral to spine
Proximal
Ety - Proximus, nearest
Def - Closer to a point of attachment
Ex - shoulder is proximal to elbow
Distal
Ety - di + sto, to be distant
Def- Farther from a point of attachment
Ex - Ankle is distal to hip

Def- Away from the midline of the body
