Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) -
A basic communication protocol, usually used by network devices, including routers, to send error messages and operational information
TCP -
Connection-oriented, A formal connection setup and close. “Reliable” delivery,
UDP –
Connectionless, No formal open or close to the connection. “Unreliable” delivery
Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) -
Creates a tunnel between two IP endpoints, making them appear to be directly connected. No encryption.
Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) -
A VPN protocol. Provides encryption and security of data over OSI layer 3.
Authentication Header (AH) in IPSec -
Includes a hash of the IP packet and a shared key.
Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) in IPSec -
Encrypts the packet. Adds a header, trailer, and an Integrity Check Value.
