1.2 Network Topologies Flashcards
Mesh network
Each host is physically connected with all other hosts on the network
Star/hub-and-spoke network
Each host is physically connected with a central node such as a router, hub, or switch.
Bus network
All devices connected to a common half-duplex link that terminates at both ends.
Ring network
all nodes connect to two other nodes, meaning that the common link does not terminate and forms a ring.
Hybrid network
combination of two or more topologies.
Peer-to-peer network
Interconnected devices directly sharing resources with one another.
Client-server network
Centralized servers providing resources to multiple clients.
Local area network (LAN)
local network. Usually within the same building
Metropolitan area network (MAN) –
network within a city. Usually used by government
Wide area network (WAN) –
network that can span globe. Widely use by everyone
Wireless local area network (WLAN) –
makes device wireless for local area network
Personal area network (PAN) –
Bluetooth, NFC
Campus area network (CAN) –
similar to a metropolitan area network, but used by college or large companies
Storage area network (SAN) –
network that is full of data storage devices
Software-defined wide area network (SDWAN) -
WAN built for Cloud base resources/software
Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS)
Routes traffic based on Labels rather than network addresses
Multipoint generic routing encapsulation (mGRE)
Dynamic mesh. protocol that can be used to enable one node to communicate with many nodes
Demarcation point
Physical network boundary point between telecom company and a private network.
Smartjack
Network demarcation terminals that provide diagnostic capabilities. Usually a Network interface unit(NUI)
vSwitch
virtual switch.
Virtual network interface card (vNIC)
allows device to communicate to outside devices/vSwitch. configured on the hypervisor
Network function virtualization (NFV)
The replacement of physical network devices with virtual versions.
Hypervisor
Software that creates and runs virtual machines.
Satellite -
data over Satellite.
Digital subscriber line (DSL) -
data over telephone lines.
Cable -
Data over coax/cable TV infrastructure.
Leased line -
A dedicated communication channel between two sites.
Metro-optical -
MAN over fibre.
