Assessment of nutritional status - Adults

  1. Body Mass Index (BMI)
    Weight (kg) / Height2 (cm)
    *BMI alone is insufficient to guide clinical decision making
  2. Waist Circumference (WC)
    Provides an independent prediction of risk beyond that of BMI alone.
    Increased risk of metabolic complications: men > 102 cm, women > 88 cm
  3. Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR)
    Measure of abdominal obesity.
    Increased risk of metabolic complications: men 􀑈 0.90, women 􀑈􀀃􀏬􀍘85.
  4. Skinfold caliper
    Assessment of body fat in adults and children.
    Triceps skinfold, bicep skinfold, subcapsular skinfold, suprailic skinfold.
  5. EOSS staging tool
    Edmonton obesity staging system (stage 0 to stage 4).
    Considers metabolic parameters, physical parameters, psychological parameters, comorbidities, and
    hospital admissions in order to determine the optimal obesity treatment.
