Context of the Civil War
- USSR and USA regarded each other as a threat to national security
- Triggered a change in the US policy
- USSR agreed Greece should remain within the Western sphere of influence after the war (influenced by percentages agreement)
- However, when Greece was liberated, a civil war broke out - between Greek monarchists and Greek communists.
- Britain had been providing aid to the anti-communist forces in Greece but in Feb 1947 it announced that this was no longer and appealed to the USA to assume the financial benefits.

Causes of the War
- Axis took power in 1941 but lacked legitimacy in government
- Gov in exile in Egypt
- British forced a cease fire/truce but they had an advantage in supplies and didn’t last for land
