What is planned obsolescence?

A

Ensuring that a product only performs it ps tasks for a certain length of time

Examples are pens that are thrown when run out and phones that go out of fashion when a new model comes out

A

It is bad for the environment because more materials and energy is needed to make replacements and it creates waste and pollution

How are updates and functions used in planned obsolescence?

A

Some phones receive occasional software updates but after a while these will stop and make the phone inneficient.
A manufacturer must calculate how many upgrades it wants to sell because a customer may want to wait for a while until a certain model comes out if new upgrades come out every month which is not value for money

A

Companies need to stay ahead if their competition by producing new ‘must have’ items so customers feel the need to keep buying

What is design for maintainance?

A

Design so that parts can be repaired or replaced. Nowadays electronics are so complicated that they are beyond the ability of being repaired without specialists. Washing machines can be repaired because it is expensive to replace

A

If the product breaks there is a guarantee but after it expires the company may offer a discount to keep the customer interested.

Mostly through social media and the press. There is increased awareness by consumers about social and environmental issues
