1.5 Atonement and salvation Flashcards
What is the doctrine of original sin?
A teaching that tells that all human beings are born imperfect and sinful, separating us from God. Original sin came from the first humans, Adam and Eve, disobeying God - this is known as the Fall.
What is the doctrine of the Fall?
Adam and Eve lived in a perfect world without fault. They disobeyed God and fell from their perfect state, separating themselves from God.
Why are the doctrines of original sin and the Fall important?
They explain how evil and suffering were introduced into the world.
What is atonement?
Atonement is humans being reconciled with God in order to be given eternal life. Jesus’ suffering offered redemption for all of mankind, and humans’ original relationship with God had been restored.
What is redemption?
The freedom from the consequences of sin which means that if we repent, we can still go to Heaven.
What are some different beliefs about how atonement leads to salvation?
The Moral Change Theory - Jesus set an example for humans so that they could change their ways, restoring their relationship with God.
The Ransom Theory - Jesus’ death paid the price to release humans from being enslaved to Satan.
What is salvation?
Salvation is being granted eternal life with God after death.
How can Christians achieve salvation?
In order to achieve salvation you must be free from sin:
- Being baptized
- Repenting your sins
- Accepting Jesus as your Saviour
- Participating in sacraments
Why is atonement and salvation important?
- Confirms that God is all-loving, God made atonement possible for us through Jesus
- Means that humans are able to achieve eternal life; wouldn’t be able to do this without Jesus’ intervention
