1.5 Flashcards
What is a physical network map?
A map that follows the physical wire and device. It also include the same in a rack.
What is a logical network map?
Specialized software useful for planning and collaboration to be used in high level views.
What is a Star topology?
It’s a topology used in most large and small networks where all devices are connected to a central device like a switch.
What is a RIng topology?
It’s a topology still used in many MANs and WANs where all of the devices are connected to each other like a ring form.
What is a Mesh network?
Its a topology where there are multiple links to the same place for redundancy, fault-tolerance and load balancing. Mostly used in WANs.
What is a Bus network?
It’s atopology used in local area networks which is simple but prone to errors and mostly used in a vehicle CAN bus (Controller Area Network).
What are some wireless logical topologies?
- Infrastructure
- Ad hoc networking
- Mesh
What is the most common wireless communication mode?
Infrastructure (all devices communicate through an access point)
What is Ad hoc networking?
It’s a wireless logical topology where device communicate amongst themselves without an access point (No pre-existing infrastructure).
What’s a logical Mesh topology?
It’s a network topology where Ad hoc devices work together to form a mesh “cloud”.
Whats the advantage of logical mesh compared to other wireless topologies?
It self forms and self heals.
Whats a LAN?
A network in a building or group of buildings which is high-speed connectivity. (Local Area Network)
What are the types of a LAN?
- Ethernet
2. 802.11 wireless
Whats a WLAN?
It’s the wireless LAN which uses 802.11 technology and you can expand expand coverage with additional access points.
Whats a MAN?
It’s a network in the city which is larger than LAN but smaller than WAN which is common to see them in government ownerships (Metropolitan Area Network)
Whats a WAN?
A network that is spanning the globe and usually connects LANs across a distance but generally slower than LANs. (Wide Area Network)
What are some examples of WAN technologies?
- Point-to-point serial
- MPLS
- Satellite communications
What is a CAN?
(Campus Area Network) It’s a limited geographic area network using LAN technologies to create a network within a few building close to each other.
What technology does a CAN use?
LAN technologies like a fiber connected or high speed Ethernet but there is no need for a third party provider.
What is a NAS?
(Network Attached Storage) Its a network connected to a shared storage device across the network, also called File-level access.
What is a SAN?
(Storage Area Network) It’s a network that looks and feels like a local storage device but it’s very efficient for reading and writing. Also called Block-level access.
What do NAS and SAN require?
A lot of bandwidth
What is a PAN?
(Personal Area Network) user’s own private network
What are some examples of PAN?
Bluetooth, IR, NFC and they get used in an automobile, mobile phones and health devices like a workout telemetry.
What is IoT used for?
- Wearable technologies (like watches, glasses, health monitors)
- Home automation (like video doorbells, Internet-connected garage door openers, heating and cooling systems)
What is Z-Wave used for?
Home automation networking
What kind of networking and technology does Z-Wave use?
Wireless mesh networking and it uses the ISM band
T/F) Z-Wave is uses 800 MHz frequencies.
False, It uses 900 MHz frequencies and thats why there is no conflict with 802.11.
What is ANT/ANT+?
It’s a wireless sensor network protocol which uses 2.4 GHz ISM band and it’s used in fitness devices or heart monitors.
T/F) ANT/ANT+ is a 802.11 connection.
False its not either bluetooth or 802.11 but it doesn’t require any encryption.
What is Bluetooth?
It’s a high speed communication PAN over short distances that connects our mobile devices.
What are some bluetooth connection devices?
Smarthphones, tethering, headsets and headphones, health monitors, smartwatches, automobile and phone integration and external speakers.
What is NFC?
(Near Field Communication) It’s a 2 way wireless communication.
What is NFC used for?
- It is used in payment systems (Major credit cards and online wallets)
- Bootstrap for other wireless like bluetooth pairing.
- Access token, Identity card
What is IR?
(Infrared) it is included on many smartphones, tablets and smartwatches and mostly is used to control entertainment center systems.
What is RFID and what is it used for?
(Radio Frequency Identification) Its a technology almost everywhere these days like Pet identification, access badges and Radar or anything that needs to be tracked.
How does RFID work in a radar technology?
- Radio frequency transmitted to the tag
- RF powers the tag, ID is transmitted back
- Bidirectional communication
- Some tag formats can be powered.
What is IEEE 802.11?
Its the wireless networking managed by the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802)
