1.5 Flashcards
Define Drug
Chemical agent that has a biological effect
Curative vs. Palliative
Curative - cures a disease (drugs rarely do this)
Palliative - treating/managing symptoms
How can enantiomeric drugs have different effects?
- Sometimes 1 enantiomer may work over the other
- When put into sterile environment, they may act different
How do drugs get to right tissue?
Have to pass blood brain barrier or be injected
T/F: Drugs have to bind to receptors
False
Define receptor
A structure or site on the surface or interior of cell that binds substances and initiates a biochemical event leading to a physiological response
- Located on membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus
What are examples of things receptors can bind to?
Hormones, antigens, drugs, neurotransmitters
Define pharmacology
Study of drugs
Define pharmodynamics
How does the drug affect the body?
Define pharmacokinetics
What does the body do to the drug?
Define pharmacogenomics/pharmacogenetics
Genetic variation that gives rise to differing response to drugs
- How we see the differences
Define pharmacy
Science concerned with the manufacture, preparation, and dispensing of drugs
Define pharmacotherapeutics
Prevention and treatment of disease
Define pharmacognosy
Study of chemistry, activity, and use of natural compounds
Define toxicology
Study of poisons
