14.9.3 Proxy Server Facts Flashcards
Types of Proxy Servers
Website Proxies (VPNs): Allow users to browse the internet anonymously and encrypt data so ISPs can’t see it.
Firewalls: Protect the network by blocking unwanted traffic and acting as a barrier between the network and the internet.
Content Filters: Block users from accessing inappropriate websites by regulating traffic.
Proxy Server
A proxy server is a device that exists outside a network and forwards all traffic on behalf of users. It helps manage and control network traffic, keeping information private and secure.
Features of Proxy Servers
Caching: Saves frequently accessed data so it loads faster for users.
Security: Uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to give all devices the same public IP address, making it harder for hackers to target specific devices.
Sharing Internet Connections: Allows multiple devices to connect through one internet connection, managing traffic flow effectively.
Forward vs. Reverse Proxy
Forward Proxy: Sits between the network and the internet, managing outgoing and incoming traffic.
Reverse Proxy: Located within the network, it manages traffic between servers and client devices.
Key Differences Between Forward and Reverse Proxies
Placement: Forward proxies connect users to the internet; reverse proxies connect servers to users.
Traffic Management: Forward proxies manage external traffic; reverse proxies manage internal network traffic.
