What is a firewall?
A firewall is a device or software that monitors and filters inbound and outbound traffic on a network.
What are the two types of firewalls?
A: Hardware (network-based) and Software (host-based).
What is a hardware firewall.
A network-based device placed between the internet and internal networks for protection.
What is a software firewall?
A host-based device installed on a single machine that protects only that device.
What are firewall functions controlled by ?
Firewalls use a set of rules called an Access Control List (ACL) to allow or block traffic.
What traffic can a firewall filter?
By type of traffic, ports, protocols, or source/destination addresses.
What is packet filtering?
A firewall that checks the source/destination IP addresses and ports, blocking unwanted packets.
What is a circuit layer gateway?
A firewall that scans traffic based on TCP or UDP transmission, allowing legitimate connections.
What is an application-level gateway?
A firewall that inspects packet contents and allows or denies traffic based on the application used.
