14.10 Install, Configure, and Secure Browsers Flashcards
What is a proxy server?
A proxy server is a device outside of a network that forwards all traffic on behalf of users, managing and controlling network access.
Website Proxies (VPNs)
What are website proxies?
Website proxies, often called VPNs, allow users to connect to the internet anonymously by encrypting data so that ISPs can’t see it.
Firewalls
What is the function of a firewall?
A firewall protects the network by blocking unwanted traffic and acting as a barrier between the network and the internet.
Content Filters
Front: What is a content filter?
A content filter blocks users from accessing inappropriate websites by regulating incoming and outgoing connection requests.
Caching
What is caching in a proxy server?
Caching stores frequently accessed data, allowing users to load web pages faster since their requests don’t leave the network.
Security in Proxy Servers
Front: How do proxy servers enhance security?
Proxy servers use Network Address Translation (NAT) to give multiple devices the same public IP address, making it harder for hackers to target specific devices.
Sharing Internet Connections
What does sharing internet connections mean in the context of proxy servers?
Proxy servers allow multiple devices to connect through one internet connection, effectively managing network traffic.
Reverse Proxy
What is a reverse proxy?
A reverse proxy is located within the network and manages traffic between servers and client devices.
Forward Proxy
Front: What is a forward proxy?
A forward proxy is placed between a network and the internet, managing traffic leaving the network and traffic coming in from the outside.
Configuring Proxy Settings
Why would you configure a laptop to use a corporate proxy server?
Configuring the laptop allows controlled internet access, enhanced security, user anonymity, improved performance, monitoring of traffic, and optimized bandwidth management.
Key Differences Between Forward and Reverse Proxies
Front: What is the main difference between a forward and a reverse proxy?
A forward proxy connects users to the internet; a reverse proxy connects servers to users, managing internal traffic.
Hashing
A form of security that applies an algorithm to a string of characters. Hashing is used in network communication to authenticate the origin of the message and validate the integrity of data.
Extensions and plug-ins
Small applications you can install on a browser.
Trusted and untrusted sources
Sites on the internet that are or are not certified by a certificate authority (CA).
Password manager
Software you can use to save and create passwords.
