1) Lancs set up, with their backs to Cock Beck
2) Yorkists set up to face Lancs on a ridge, wind blowing towards the Lancs as snow begins to fall
What happened DURING the Battle of Towton?
1) Fauconberg orders the Yorkist archers to fire, and the wind carries the arrows deep into the Lancs as they’re blinded by the snow
2) in response, Lanc archers returned fire, unable to see the arrows fall short due to the snow
3) Fauconberg orders Yorkists to return fire again, using the Lanc arrows in front of them
4) Lancs advance to engage in close-combat
5) as the left Yorkist wing fell into disarray, Edward IV took control and killed his horse as a symbol of standing his ground. This was a large morale boost
6) the indecisive fighting continued for 3 hours, until Norfolk arrives late with reinforcements and routs the Lancs, breaking their formation as they flee
7) Lancs massacred as they flee, ditching their armour to run faster and were chopped down, or as they drowned attempting to cross Cock Beck and the River Wharfe
What were the consequences of the Battle of Towton?
- Henry, Margaret, Somerset and more flee to Scotland, weakening the Lanc position in England
- Edward IV’s reign was consolidated
