difference between management and leadership
Leadership is about having a vision, sharing that vision with others and providing direction.
Management is the day-to-day organisation of the business, its resources and its staffing.

autocratic leadership definition
Leaders have complete control over decision making with little/no input from others. Communication is top down and one way, and there is very little delegation.
autocratic leadership advantages
Decisions are made quickly, employees have clear instructions to follow
autocratic leadership disadvantages
Employees ideas and creativity may not be considered which can decrease employee motivation due to lack of input
Laissez- faire leadership definition
Leader takes a hands-off approach and allows their team to manage their own work and make decisions. Employees have to freedom to do what they think is best.
Laissez- faire leadership advantages
Employees may feel empowered and motivated by their responsibility, employees are more creative and skilful and become more trusted by the business
Laissez- faire leadership disadvantages
Lack of supervision may lead to poor productivity, employees may feel pressured if they lack support, poor performance if inexperienced staff are left with no instructions
democratic leadership definition
Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. Employees have greater involvement in decision-making.

It increases the amount of knowledge that is available to the team, employees are more accepting of change within the organisation, input from employees brings creativity and ideas
democratic leadership disadvantages
Often some employees may be disappointed if their ideas are not implemented, decision making is time consuming
paternalistic leadership definition
Leader decides what is best for employees, has their best interests at heart in every decision. Employees are consulted but leader makes the final decision. Based on a parent/child relationship so the manager will aim to improve the business but also have an emotional connection to employees.
paternalistic leadership advantages
Staff turnover will decrease as emphasis is placed on the employee’s needs so employees feel recognised, there is an understanding that the manager wants everyone to succeed, which can result in a lower amount of competition among employees, decision making is still quick
paternalistic leadership disadvantages
employees lack involvement in decision making, employees rely on the leader more than they would in a typical work setting
