What is delegation?
involves transferring responsibility from a manager to their staff
Advantages of delegation:
gives employees a sense of ownership and control over their work, which can lead to improved productivity,
spreads out tasks and responsibilities so work load can be managed more easily
Disadvantages of delegation:
employees could over delegate meaning employees may not be capable of taking on extra responsibility or it may cause increased stress levels
What is consultation?
it involves seeking the input of staff on decisions that affect their work
Advantages of consultation:
this inclusion can increase staff engagement and commitment leading to improved productivity,
decisions and change is more readily accepted by employees
Disadvantages of consultation:
dependent on whether employees views are actually considered
What is empowerment?
involves giving staff the authority and resources to make decisions and take action without first receiving management approval
Advantages of empowerment:
can result in senior managers having more time for important strategic decisions,
increases staff sense of ownership and responsibility
Disadvantages of empowerment:
requires trust on the part of the management team,
employees may not be able to cope with the amount of responsibility and this could increase stress levels

involves creating opportunities for staff to work collaboratively
Advantages of team working:
staff can share ideas and expertise leading to improved productivity and innovation,
builds positive employee relationships which can improve communication and job satisfaction
Disadvantages of team working:
potential for conflicts,
limits employee independence which can feel restrictive for those who prefer more control over their work
What is flexible working?
providing staff with the option to work remotely or to adjust their hours to suit their lifestyle
Advantages of flexible working:
can increase staff satisfaction and work-life balance leading to improved productivity and reduced turnover
Disadvantages of flexible working:
can be harder for managers to control and measure the amount of work that employees are completing effectively
What is job enrichment?
involves adding more challenging or meaningful tasks to a job
Advantages of job enrichment:
develops employees range of skills and builds a more versatile and capable workforce,
increases job satisfaction
Disadvantages of job enrichment:
employees may not be skilled or experienced in the new tasks they’re asked to perform which can reduce productivity,
increases workload
What is job rotation?
involves moving staff between different roles in the business
Advantages of job rotation:
highlights employees strengths,
prevents boredom which increases engagement with the tasks being carried out
Disadvantages of job rotation:
employees must be trained in all roles which can be time consuming and costly,
employees are not as confident at every role and they might be more prone to making mistakes
What is job enlargement?
giving employees more tasks of a similar level of complexity
Advantages of job enlargement:
the employee rarely needs to acquire new skills to carry out the additional task,
increased exposure to multiple job responsibilities assists employees in exploring new strengths
Disadvantages of job enlargement:
workers are not able to make full use of their skills
