What is the distinction between management & leadership
- Leadership is about having a vision, sharing that vision with others and providing direction
- Management is the day-to-day organisation of the business, its resources and its staffing
What are the 4 types of leadership styles?
- Autocratic
- Laissez- faire
- Democratic
- Paternalistic
What is the autocratic style of leadership & when does it work best?
- Where leader has full control over decision making, with little or no input from others
Style is more appropriate where there is a need for quick decision-making, such as during crisis
May also be suitable in small business where owner is primary decision-maker & has complete control over business
What is the laissez-faire style of leadership & when does it work best?
- Leader takes a hands-off approach & allow their team to manage their own work
This style is more appropriate where the staff are very experienced and require minimal supervision
What is the democratic style of leadership & when does it work best?
- Leader involves their team in the decision making process
This style is more appropriate when the business needs to encourage creativity, innovation, & employee engagement
What is the paternalistic style of leadership & when does it work best?
- Leader takes on a parental role,making decisions in the best interest of their staff
This style is more appropriate where staff are uneducated or inexperienced
They require more guidance & support from their leader
