[14.1] survival and response Flashcards
describe the sequence of events in stimulus and response
- stimulus
- receptor
- coordinator
- effector
- response
what is a stimulus?
a detectable change in the internal or external environment of an organism that leads to a response
what is a receptor?
- detects stimuli
- specific to one type of stimulus
- eg. photoreceptor, thermoreceptor, chemoreceptor etc.
what is a coordinator?
- mediator between receptor and effector
- determines what the response will be and tells the effector
- eg. CNS
what is an effector?
- brings about the response
- eg. secretion of hormones from gland, movement of muscle
what is a response?
- result of the change
- eg. trees losing leaves
where do sensory, relay, and motor neurons fit into the sequence of events?
- sensory: between receptor and coordinator
- relay: coordinator
- motor: between coordinator and effector
what is sensitivity?
the capacity to detect internal or external stimuli and to then respond appropriately
what does an endocrine gland do?
produces material and secretes it via the bloodstream
what does an exocrine gland do?
- produces material and secretes it via a duct
- eg. pancreatic duct secretes amylase
what is taxis?
- directional movement based response to a specific stimulus
- positive = towards, negative = away
what is kinesis?
- random movement based response to a specific stimulus
- changes speed and rate at which it changes direction
what is the aim of tactic and kinetic responses?
for the organism to get itself into a favourable environment
